Static Virtual Channels (Compact 7)

3/12/2014

Static virtual channels are custom data formats that clients and servers handle independently of the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) protocol. Use static virtual channels to add new Remote Desktop functionality without having to modify the RDP protocol.

The following components or functionality can use static virtual channels over RDP:

  • Serial or printer drivers
  • File system redirection
  • Copy/Paste redirection

A static virtual channel application requires the following components that you create:

  • Server component   The user-mode application that runs in a client session on the server running Terminal Services.
  • Client component   A DLL that is loaded into memory on the Windows Embedded Compact powered device.

If you have included a static virtual channel application in your Terminal Services deployment, make the application available to client devices by using the Remote Desktop ActiveX Control Interfaces.

For reference information, see Remote Desktop Connection Reference and Static Virtual Channels Registry Settings.
