Update Windows Embedded Compact [FrontMatter] (Compact 7)

You can re-run the Windows Embedded Compact 7 installer at any time to check for updates to Windows Embedded Compact. From the installer, you can specify how far to bring your installation up to date. You can also use the installer to configure automatic updates for Windows Embedded Compact.

Updates may include fixes for OS development problems, fixes for maintenance issues related to your custom platform, new tools, application updates, or support for features or add-ins. For a list of available updates, see Download Windows Embedded Compact. Scroll to the bottom of the page, and under Monthly Updates for Compact 7, click Download Updates. You can read through the available updates there and then install as many as you choose by using the slider control on the Update Installation page of the installation wizard. As an additional option, you can configure automatic updates in the Configure Automatic Updates page of the installation wizard.

Prerequisites

To complete the procedures in this topic, you must install the following software if you haven't already:

  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 (Service Pack 1 is required if you want to configure automatic updates.)
  • Windows Embedded Compact 

Install Updates

The following procedure shows the fastest way to open the Windows Embedded Compact installer to begin the update process. During the update process, you will be asked to log in and register with Microsoft at a web page that the installer will open for you. After you register, you will be returned to the installer to complete the update process. You only have to register one time. If you go through the update process again, you will only be asked to log in.

To update Windows Embedded Compact 

  1. In Windows 7, in Control Panel (icon view), click Programs and Features. (In Windows Vista, click Add or Remove Programs.)

  2. In the list of currently installed programs, select **Windows Embedded Compact 7 **, and then click Change.

    Tip

    Optionally, you could open the installer by inserting the DVD from which you originally installed Windows Embedded Compact.

  3. On the Customize Installation page, select Update, and then click Next.

  4. On the Windows Embedded Developer Update page, click Next.

    A browser window opens that asks you to log in to the Windows Embedded Developer Update website. Updates to Windows Embedded Compact 7 are authorized through this website.

  5. On the Windows Embedded Developer Update Registration webpage, log in using a Microsoft account if you have one, or create a new account and log in. One of the following situations will occur:

    • If this is your first time updating Windows Embedded Compact, a registration form appears in the browser window.

      1. The registration form asks for your consent to have a Windows Embedded representative contact you to supply further information. If you agree, select the Yes, I agree check box next to the text, Do you agree that a Windows Embedded representative may contact you using the phone number or email address provided by you to supply further Windows Embedded information?

        Important

        If you select No, I do not agree, you will not be able to update Windows Embedded Compact, and you will be returned to the Windows Embedded Developer Update page of the Windows Embedded Compact installation wizard.

      2. Fill out the rest of the form, and then click Continue to return to the Windows Embedded Compact installation wizard.

    • If this is not your first time updating Windows Embedded Compact and you have previously registered, you are returned to the Windows Embedded Compact installation wizard after you have logged in.

  6. On the Windows Embedded Developer Update Registered page of the wizard, select Check for Updates now, and then click Next.

    Tip

    At the end of the update process, you will have the option to configure Windows Embedded Compact so updates are automatically downloaded if that's your preference. You do not need to do that now.

  7. On the Windows Embedded Developer Update is Ready To Proceed page, click Next.

  8. In the Update End-User License Agreement page, select I agree to the terms and conditions if you do, and then click Next.

    The Update Installation page appears.

  9. At the top of the Update Installation page, there is a slider that represents the timeline of all the available updates.

    Move the slider to the location on the timeline that represents how far you want to bring your installation up to date, and then click Next.

  10. On the Install Offline Layout page, select whether to create an offline layout, and then click Next.

    Tip

    You do not have to select the same option that you chose when you installed Windows Embedded Compact. If you select Yes, create an offline layout, then make sure that you also check Yes, install the product on this machine, otherwise nothing will be installed and no updates will be applied.

  11. In the Ready to Proceed summary page, review your changes and updates, and then click Install. If a User Account Control window appears, click Yes.

    The update process begins.

  12. During the update process, you might be asked to provide a path to the installation source files. Insert your original installation DVD and navigate to the folder that contains the requested file, and then click OK.

    Tip

    If you do not have your original installation DVD, and you have an Internet connection, you can click Download.

    The update process may take as much time as the original installation took.

    After the update process completes, the Finished page appears. If you want to configure automatic updates, continue with the next procedure. Otherwise, click Finish.

Configure Automatic Updates

After the update process completes as described in the preceding procedure, you have the option to configure Windows Embedded Compact so that it will be updated automatically.

To configure automatic updates

  1. After the update process completes and the Finished page appears, click Check to configure automatic updates (requires Visual Studio SP1).

    You are returned to the Windows Embedded Developer Update Registered page of the Windows Embedded Compact installation wizard.

    Tip

    If you already closed the installer, you can open it again from the Control Panel (icon view). Click Programs and Features (or click Add or Remove Programs in Windows Vista). The installation wizard will open to the Windows Embedded Developer Update Registered page.

  2. Select Configure Automatic Updates, and then click Next.

  3. In the Windows Embedded Developer Update Configuration page, if you want to enable automatic updates, select Check for updates automatically every, select a time period from the drop-down list box, and then click Next.

  4. If you do not already have the Windows Embedded Developer Update plug-in for Visual Studio installed, the Windows Embedded Developer Update Is Ready to Proceed page will appear. Click Next.

    The installation for the plug-in begins.

  5. On the Finished page, click Finish.
