This module provides the user interface for playing music and video on a device.

This module provides basic functionality that allows user to play audio and media files on the device. Windows Media Player also provides optional features that enable users to do the following:

  • Find and play digital media files on the network
  • Organize digital media collection
  • Play CDs and DVDs
  • Stream media from the Internet
  • Share and stream media
  • Rip music from audio CDs
  • Burn CDs
  • Sync media files to other portable devices
  • Find and purchase content on the Internet through online stores

Notes

The Windows Media Player 12 module does not include codecs. To play audio or video content, you must include one or more modules in the Premium Codecs category in your image.

Windows Media Player may not have AutoPlay functionality available for certain DVDs unless you include Microsoft DTV-DVD Audio Decoder (MPEG-2, AAC) (license required) and Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder (MPEG-2, H.264) (license required) in your image.

Audio sections of some media may not play unless you include Microsoft DTV-DVD Audio Decoder (MPEG-2, AAC) (license required) in your image.

For the Open File Location feature to work when the end user right-clicks a file in the Windows Media Player library, you must include explorer in your image and use it as your shell.

For Windows Media Player to burn CDs, you must include Image Mastering API (IMAPI) V2 in your image.

On a 64-bit OS, Windows-32-bit-on-Windows-64-bit (WOW64) mode apps may require that you include Windows Media Player 12 in your device image to fully support HTML5.
