Customer Experience Improvement Program (Standard 8)

7/8/2014

Learn how to manage your participation in the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP) for Windows Embedded 8 Standard (Standard 8).

The Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP) is a voluntary program that collects information about how customers use Windows Embedded 8 Standard (Standard 8) and Image Configuration Editor (ICE), and some of the problems they encounter. Microsoft uses this information to improve the products and features customers use most and to help resolve issues. Participation in the CEIP is voluntary, and the results are software improvements that better meet the needs of our customers.

The CEIP for the Standard 8 Toolkit collects information about the development computer on which the Standard 8 Toolkit is installed and how you use the Standard 8 Toolkit. This information does not include any contact information; instead, a GUID is generated and stored on your computer to uniquely identify it. CEIP uses this GUID to help determine how widespread any particular feedback or issue is. Your unique GUID is sent with every CEIP report. Some reports might unintentionally contain individual identifiers, such as a serial number for a device that is connected to your development computer. Microsoft filters the information that is contained in CEIP reports to remove any individual identifiers that the CEIP reports might contain.

You can obtain more information about the CEIP at Microsoft Customer Experience Improvement Program.

You can obtain more information about the Windows Embedded privacy policy at Privacy Statement.

Manage Your Participation in the CEIP for the Standard 8 Toolkit

When you install the Standard 8 toolkit, if you choose the Typical or Complete setup type then you are automatically enrolled in the CEIP. If you choose the Custom setup type, then you are asked to join the CEIP. The default option is to participate in the program, but you can decide to join or leave the CEIP at any time. This option determines CEIP settings for both ICE and Module Designer (MOD).

Prerequisites

  • You have installed ICE on a development computer.

To change your participation in the CEIP

  1. On your development computer, in ICE, on the Help menu, click Customer Experience Improvement Program.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • Click Yes, help improve Image Configuration Editor.
    • Click No thanks.
  3. If you want to review how your information will be used, click Read the Privacy Statement.

  4. Click OK to save your setting.

Manage Your Participation in the CEIP for a Standard 8 Device

If you are setting up your Standard 8 device for the first time, you can manage your CEIP participation during the Settings phase of setup.

To manage your participation in the CEIP during setup

  • On the Settings screen during setup, choose one of the following options:

    • Click Use Express Settings to use the default recommended settings. One of the settings, among others, automatically enrolls you in the CEIP.
    • Click Customize to manually control the settings. You can participate in the CEIP by selecting Participate in the Customer Experience Improvement Program to help improve Microsoft software and services under Send Microsoft info to help make Windows and apps better.

If you want to manage your participation in the CEIP on a Standard 8 device that has already been set up, you have several options, depending on which Standard 8 modules are installed on your device.

Note

If participation in the CEIP is set by Group Policy, the Group Policy setting overrides any value that is set by using the following methods. The configuration of this policy setting is stored in the Policies section under HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\CEIPEnable.

Important

If you have any write filters enabled on your device, such as Unified Write Filter (UWF), you may need to disable the write filter and restart your device before making any changes to your CEIP settings.

Use the Control Panel to Manage Your Participation in the CEIP

If you have the Windows Security Center and the Error Reporting and Solutions modules on your device, you can use the Action Center to manage your CEIP settings.

To use the Action Center to manage your participation in the CEIP

  1. In Control Panel, click Action Center.

  2. Click Change Action Center settings.

  3. Under Related settings, click Customer Experience Improvement Program settings.

  4. On the Customer Experience Improvement Program window, select your participation in the CEIP.

Use a Command-Line Tool to Manage Your Participation in the CEIP

If you have the Error Reporting and Solutions module on your device, but do not have the Windows Security Center module, you can use a command-line tool to access your CEIP settings.

To use the command line to manage your participation in the CEIP

  1. At a command prompt with administrator rights, type the following command:

    C:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe werconcpl.dll,ShowCEIPDialog

  2. On the Customer Experience Improvement Program window, select your participation in the CEIP.

Use the Registry to Manage Your Participation in the CEIP

You can also edit the registry to change your participation in the CEIP, regardless of which modules are installed on your device.

To use the registry to manage your participation in the CEIP

  • You can change your participation in the CEIP by changing the following registry value:

    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\CEIPEnable

Set this value to 0 (zero) to disable participation in the CEIP, and 1 to enable participation.

For more information about this registry key, see CEIPEnable on MSDN.
