Startup Server Selection

There are two primary methods for putting the device-side part of Platform Manager on a target device. The first method is through Platform Builder. With this method, you integrate the device-side part of Platform Manager into the operating system (OS) before you create an OS image.

The second method involves using a startup server to load the device-side part of Platform Manager on demand. A startup server is a mechanism that downloads files to a target device and then runs the files on the target device. The startup server copies files required by the Platform Manager transport to the target device. The startup server then runs the files, activating the transport and establishing communication between the development workstation and the target device.

The practice of using a startup server to load the Platform Manager transport on demand is an efficient use of memory resources on the target device. For more information about transports, see Transport Selection.
