To Enable Remote Administration of RMS

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

A Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate must be installed before remote administration of RMS is possible. Additionally, Internet Explorer 6.0 or later must be installed on the computer being used for remote administration of RMS. The steps in this procedure assume that a valid SSL certificate has already been imported and configured on the RMS Web site. For more information on importing and administering SSL certificates with Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager, see IIS Help.

Enabling Remote Administration of RMS

To Enable Remote Administration of RMS

  1. Log on to the server as a member of the Administrators group that you want to be able to remotely administer.

  2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and thenn click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.

  3. Expand the item that represents the Web site on which you have provisioned RMS.

  4. Right-click the _wmcs folder, and click Properties. On the Directory Security tab, under Secure communication, click Edit, click Require secure channel, and then click OK. Assuming that the SSL certificate is installed, this applies Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protection to the RMS Web services.

  5. Right-click the Admin folder, and then click Properties. On the Directory Security tab, under IP address and domain name restrictions, click Edit and then, under IP address access restrictions, click Granted access to allow all computers to request a connection to this Web site.


    For a higer level of security, you can explicitly add only the IP addresses of trusted computers to the list of IP addresses that can access this site.
