Troubleshooting RMS

This subject is not intended to be a comprehensive list of solutions for all issues, but it provides information that you can use to troubleshoot problems that you may encounter when you deploy and operate RMS and answers to frequently asked questions (FAQ).

  • Administration Toolkit for Windows Rights Management Services (RMS) 1.0. These tools enable an administrator to quickly and easily modify RMS configuration databases and get information about the overall system configuration. Several test deployments have shown that these tools can help system administrators who are trying to verify that the RMS server is working as intended and in troubleshooting deployment issues. The toolkit can be downloaded from the Microsoft Web site (


Although great care is taken to ensure that the tools operate correctly, they are not part of Windows RMS and are not supported by Microsoft. For this reason, Microsoft Product Support Services is unable to answer questions about this toolkit. The Administration Toolkit for Windows Rights Management Services (RMS) 1.0 is only available in English.

  • Windows RMS Newsgroup. Newsgroups are a great place to ask questions of other RMS users and find general information about other user’s experiences with RMS. You can subscribe to the RMS newsgroup from the Microsoft Discussions Groups
