Issue

The Web site that the Remote Desktop Gateway (RD Gateway) server is configured to use is not started on the Web (IIS) server.

Impact

If the Web site that the RD Gateway server is configured to use is not started on the Web (IIS) server, users cannot connect to internal network resources (computers) by using the RD Gateway server.

Resolution

Use the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager tool to ensure that the Web site that the RD Gateway server is configured to use is started.

The RD Gateway server is dependent on Internet Information Services (IIS). If the Web server or Web site is not started, the RD Gateway will not function correctly.

Use the following to verify the Web site is started:

  • Start the Web site

  • Verify the Web site is started

Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, on the RD Gateway server that you plan to configure, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

To start the Web site

  1. On the RD Gateway server open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager. To open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.

  2. In the Connections pane, click the node that represents your Web server.

  3. In the Actions pane, verify Stop is available, indicating the Web server is started. If your Web server is not started, click Start.

  4. In the Connections pane, click to expand the Web server, and then click to expand Sites.

  5. In the Connections pane, click the node that represents your Web site.

  6. In the Actions pane, click Start to start the Web site.

To verify the Web site is started

  1. On the RD Gateway server open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager. To open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.

  2. In the Connections pane, click to expand the Web server, and then click Sites.

  3. In Features View, look for the Web site name. The Web site status will be indicated under the Status column. If the Web site is started and using the HTTP protocol, Started(http) will appear.
