Microsoft Security Bulletin MS15-063 - Important

Vulnerability in Windows Kernel Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (3063858)

Published: June 9, 2015

Version: 1.0

Executive Summary

This security update resolves a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows. The vulnerability could allow elevation of privilege if an attacker places a malicious .dll file in a local directory on the machine or on a network share. An attacker would then have to wait for a user to run a program that can load a malicious .dll file, resulting in elevation of privilege. However, in all cases an attacker would have no way to force a user to visit such a network share or website.

This security update is rated Important for all supported editions of Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, and Windows RT. For more information, see the Affected Software section.

The security update addresses the vulnerability by correcting how Windows validates user input. For more information about the vulnerability, see the Vulnerability Information section.

For more information about this update, see Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 3063858.

Vulnerability Information

Windows LoadLibrary EoP Vulnerability - CVE-2015-1758

An elevation of privilege vulnerability exists in Microsoft Windows LoadLibrary when it fails to properly validate user input. An authenticated attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could elevate privileges on a targeted system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full administrative rights.

To exploit the vulnerability, an attacker would have to log on to the system and place a .dll file in a local directory on the machine or on a network share An attacker would then have to convince a user to run a specially crafted application designed to increase privileges. The update addresses the vulnerability by correcting how Windows validates user input.

Microsoft received information about this vulnerability through coordinated vulnerability disclosure. When this security bulletin was originally issued Microsoft had not received any information to indicate that this vulnerability had been publicly used to attack customers.
