This is to validate the width of a Windows Precision Touchpad device.

Test purpose

  • Verifies that the device sensor meets or exceeds minimum width requirement of 64mm.

Tools required

  • Ruler or Micrometer
  • PTLogo.exe

Validation steps

  1. Launch Test.DeviceWidth.json

  2. Measure touchpad width with a ruler or micrometer.

  3. Assuming X is the reported sensor width, verify that:

    1. The measured device width is between X and (X + 4).
    2. X is >= 64mm.

  4. If these conditions are true, then manually pass the iteration, otherwise manually fail the iteration. Because the sensor may be slightly smaller than the cover sheet, the measured width may be as much as 4mm greater than that reported by the device.

Important

To provide the best possible experience for users while mousing and gesturing, it is important to clearly indicate the start and end of the touchpad active area.

While we recommend that touchpads have a permanent physical indication of the active area to aide the original purchaser and future users of a device, at a minimum some temporary indication is required as part of retail unboxing to assist. If during an audit, said operator is unable to accurately measure the touchpad active dimensions, they will be unable to pass 1 or more HLK tests which may result in audit failure and revocation of HLK certification. Users need to have some bearings on where the active area of a touchpad starts and ends so they can be aware of the interaction surface for mousing and gesturing.

This guidance applies to all touchpad form factors, including but not limited to; seamless, extra buttons, dead zones, etc.
