Enable Remote Management (IIS 7)

Applies To: Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2

Enable remote management when you want to manage remote servers, sites, applications, physical or virtual directories, or files by using IIS Manager. Remote management also allows delegated administration of a server or specific content on the server. By default, remote management is not enabled for IIS 7.

Note

Only server administrators who are using IIS Manager on the local computer can configure the management service in IIS 7.

Prerequisites

For information about the levels at which you can perform this procedure, and the modules, handlers, and permissions that are required to perform this procedure, see Management Service Feature Requirements (IIS 7).

Exceptions to feature requirements

  • None

To enable remote management

  1. Open IIS Manager. For information about opening IIS Manager, see Open IIS Manager (IIS 7).

  2. In the Connections pane, click the server node in the tree.

  3. In Features View, double-click Management Service.

  4. On the Management Service page, in the Actions pane, click Stop to stop the service.

  5. Select Enable remote connections. This enables server administrators to connect remotely to the server, sites, and applications.

  6. Optionally, if you want to allow non-administrators to connect to sites and applications by using IIS Manager, configure the options under Identity Credentials:

    • Select Windows credentials only if you want to limit connections to users who have Windows credentials.

    • Select Windows credentials or IIS Manager credentials if you want to accept connections from users who have Windows credentials and users who have IIS Manager credentials.

  7. In the Actions pane, click Apply and then click Start.
