Communicate in channels, posts, and discussions

Completed

Communicating within a classroom can come in many forms for educators and students. Microsoft Teams and Schoology LMS together provide an avenue to actively encourage and create real-time conversation and threaded discussions for the entire class or small groups. Educators can monitor progress and thinking through these saved discussions to support student understanding. Discussions are great for collaborative projects. Students open an assignment in Schoology and use a Microsoft Teams channel to communicate and work with their classmates.

For example, an intermediate educator assigns students to work together in groups for a project that involves many different steps and components. The educator creates a channel in Teams for each student group. Groups can easily share and work on files together, have live discussions through Teams meetings, and use the posts to communicate in real time. The educator can monitor progress, post, share, and support the student groups inside each channel.

A secondary educator needs to assign grades to a threaded discussion, so the educator adds a discussion in Schoology LMS. The discussion is centered around a video or assignment posted in Schoology. Discussions allow students to post and comment on other student posts asynchronously, while also allowing the educator to monitor and provide formal grading for each student.

Using Microsoft Teams and Schoology courses together provides many options for educators and students to communicate. A few features that support all learners to be contributors include:

  • Dictate, making it easy to add text to posts or discussions using voice.
  • Immersive Reader (available in Teams and other Microsoft 365 tools), reading text aloud, providing translation to words and entire texts, and increasing fluency for language learners.
  • Learning tools in Edge browser that allow educators and students to have the discussion threads or other text in Schoology read aloud.
