Give and receive effective feedback

One of the best ways to help improve someone's learning is to give them effective feedback. Effective feedback contains constructive criticism that they can apply toward making concrete, measurable progress. If someone can receive feedback effectively, they can move more easily through the self-regulated feedback cycle.

In a group environment, such as that in our scenario, feedback also allows peers to build and maintain a team conversation over time. In the field of computer science—and programming in particular—effective feedback delivered in a timely, constructive manner can facilitate greater skill development across the entire team. This in turn can result in measurable performance improvement.

On the other hand, negative feedback can adversely affect people's self-confidence and, occasionally, make them feel as though they've failed. It might even discourage otherwise-talented people from taking further steps to address their knowledge gaps. Such feedback can occasionally provide new perspectives, but many people find it difficult to accept critical feedback, even when it's meant to help them grow or improve.

The way you deliver feedback has a considerable effect on how others receive it. Have you been in a situation when you received feedback that felt harsh or made you uncomfortable? Do you remember how it affected you?

Characteristics of effective feedback

Effective feedback helps to enhance the growth mindset of individuals by stimulating in them the desire to learn and improve their skills.

Effective feedback has the following characteristics:

  • It's specific and timely.
  • It focuses on what went wrong, what's going right, and why.
  • It points the person toward options and strategies instead of just providing them with the expected end states.
  • It conveys appreciation of the person's effort.
  • It conveys your trust that the person will understand and complete the task eventually.

When you give feedback, it's easy to forget that different people might receive the feedback differently. Try to be sensitive about other people's feelings and avoid statements that might offend them or put them in a defensive position. Here are some examples of not-so-effective feedback:

  • "I don't know why you're having problems with this task. It's an easy task to do."
  • "I struggled with your approach to this problem."
  • "I'm worried about you."

Types of feedback

Feedback can come in written or oral form, or a combination of the two. You can also provide feedback in a group setting or one-on-one. As you're determining the mode of communicating your feedback to someone, consider the following questions:

  • How positive or negative is the feedback? Will the recipient be put on the spot and feel compelled to accept or respond to certain details in real time, or might they need time to process the feedback in private?
  • How will the written feedback be received? Written feedback is usually received privately and, unless skillfully written, it can easily fail to convey your intended tone. Will it affect inclusiveness? Will your intent be clear to the recipient?
  • What is needed to help the recipient understand the message?
  • How does it establish your trust in the person and the person's trust in you?
