Club charters are collaborative documents that outline specific guidelines for a team to operate under. Coaches, players, and any other members of the team are able to share their vision for the team, set their goals, and collectively ratify the agreement. The club charter is a reminder of how a team agrees to conduct themselves and solve disputes when necessary.

However, a club charter is a lot more than a simple laundry list of rules that a coach makes. The stress is on their collaborative nature where weight is given to what each individual on the team wants to contribute. In a club charter, everyone gets an equal opportunity to share their thoughts on team conduct. Every participant, coach and player alike, are seen by this document as equal members.

Getting the players involved in the agreement allows them to express what is most important to them. It ensures they become part of the charter and take ownership of the charter. If a player steps out of line with expectations, they aren't just breaking the rules, they're breaking their own rules. The same rules they agreed to and helped design.

A Club or Team Charter should include:

  • Students' expectations of teammates or peers
  • Students' expectations of staff
  • Staff expectations of students
  • Student goals for the club
  • Staff goals for the club
