Learner view of a Reading Progress assignment

Completed

The Reading Progress experience is simple and easy for learners to navigate. From the class team, learners select the assignment created by their educator. In the My Work section of the assignment, they find a link to the activity.

As learners read a passage, they can record themselves in just a few steps. Video and audio recording is available on computer and mobile devices including iPad, iPhone, and Android.

Before they start reading their passage aloud, learners can take advantage of helpful tools like Immersive Reader which allows them to customize the text size, theme color, and spacing between letters and words.

After they finish reading the passage, learners can choose to:

  • Hear and watch themselves read the passage to self-assess
  • Start over if they wish to try again
  • Submit their assignment to their educator

If the educator added reading comprehension questions to the assignment, learners complete them when they attach their recording to the assignment. They answer the questions via a Forms quiz and submit their responses with their assignment.

If the educator chose to include a Reading Coach activity in the assignment, learners would enter the Reading Coach activity after finishing the reading passage recording. Once the Reading Progress portion of the assignment is complete, learners receive five personalized challenge words to practice based on autodetected mispronunciations during their reading.

Challenge word practice is supported with:

  • Audio recording of the correct pronunciation
  • Images of the meaning of the word
  • Syllabification to divide the word into chunks

Reading Coach listens to the learner read the word aloud, then provides immediate feedback by word part, using colors and symbols to designate correct, close, or incorrect pronunciation. This activity further improves reader fluency with targeted personalized words for each learner.

Reading Progress gives learners the opportunity to:

  • Practice their reading fluency skills
  • Self-assess as they watch or listen to themselves
  • Complete reading comprehension questions
  • Receive customized feedback from their educator that specifically targets their unique reading needs
