Modify the website settings

In Microsoft Expression Web, you can change the settings for your website by using the Site Settings dialog box.

You can add or remove metadata, change the name of the website, add source control information, change the default script language, specify whether a byte order mark is added to new documents, and change many other settings.

The options that are available in the Site Settings tab are determined by whether or not metadata has been added to your site. For more information about metadata, see Add or remove metadata.

To change the General site settings

  1. On the Site menu, click Site Settings.

  2. In the Site Settings dialog box, on the General tab, do one or more of the following:

    Web name

    Type a new name for your website.

    Manage the Web site using hidden metadata files

    Select or clear to add metadata to or remove metadata from your website. For more information, see Add or remove metadata.

    Expression Web uses the Expression Development Server to preview ASP.NET pages. You can change the settings for previewing web pages by using the Preview tab.

To change the Preview site settings

  1. On the Site menu, click Site Settings.

  2. In the Site Settings dialog box, on the Preview tab, select one or more of the following:

    Use this

    To do this

    Preview using Web site URL

    Select this to preview the web page by using the URL of the website.

    Use Expression Development Server

    Select For only ASP.NET Web pages if you want to use Expression Development Server for .aspx pages only. Select For all Web pages if you want to use the Expression Development Server for .aspx, .htm, and .html pages.

    The only server-side languages the Expression Development Server supports are ASP.NET and PHP. The server cannot display ASP pages.

    Preview using custom URL for this Web site

    Type the path to the location where your website resides, or use the Browse button to navigate to that location.

To change the Advanced site settings

  1. On the Site menu, click Site Settings.

  2. In the Site Settings dialog box, on the Advanced tab, do any of the following:

    Delete Files

    Delete temporary .web files that Expression Web generates to improve the speed of communication between the program and your server.

    Note

    Under Default validation script language, the Client option is for working with a defunct validation feature that is not provided in Expression Web.

To change the Language site settings

  1. On the Site menu, click Site Settings.

  2. In the Site Settings dialog box, on the Language tab, do any of the following:

    Server message language

    Select the server message language.

    The Server message language dropdown list is not available if you have not added metadata to your website.

    Default page encoding

    Select the default page encoding. For more information, see Set the default page encoding for a website.

    Ignore the keyboard when deciding the encoding of new pages

    Select to ignore the keyboard language settings when deciding the encoding of new pages. For more information, see Set the default page encoding for a website.

    Include a byte order mark (BOM) in new documents

    Select to embed a byte order mark in new documents that are encoded as Unicode (UTF-8). For more information, see Add or remove byte order marks.
