Downloading the Boot Loader to the TI OMAP5912 Aruba Board (Windows Embedded CE 6.0)

You will need to download the Windows Embedded CE boot loader to the TI OMAP5912 Aruba Board in order to download the Windows Embedded CE run-time image to the device.

If you have already downloaded the initial boot loader image in flash memory, you can download boot loader updates to the TI OMAP5912 Aruba Board.

To download the boot loader to the TI OMAP5912 Aruba Board

  1. Make sure you have installed the OMAP Software Tools.

  2. Turn on the TI OMAP5912 Aruba Board.

  3. A message icon will display on the bottom right corner of your workstation’s screen that reads: "Found New Hardware".

  4. The Found New Hardware Wizard starts and displays "Can windows connect to Windows Update to check for software?".

  5. Check the button No, not this time and click Next.

  6. Check the radio button Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) and click Next.

  7. Select the Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install radio button and click Next.

  8. Select the Have Disk button and click Browse to open OMAP73x.inf and click Next. If the driver installation suspends, reset the TI OMAP5912 Aruba Board with the S1 switch and installation will continue.

  9. Click Finish to complete the driver installation process.

    Note

    The steps above are specific to Windows XP, but other Windows versions have a similar sequence.

  10. Configure the OMAP Software Tools with the following settings and click the Download To Target button:

    Item Selection

    External RAM Type

    SDR

    Interface

    USB

    Write Address (HEX)

    0x10000000

    Secondary Boot Firmware

    OST_Load_GP.2nd

    Mode of Operation

    Download and Run from External RAM

    Input File

    Eboot.nb0

  11. Configure your terminal emulation software with the following settings:

    Bits per second Data bits Parity Stop bits Flow control

    38400

    8

    None

    1

    None

  12. Reset the TI OMAP5912 Aruba Board. After the boot loader has been downloaded to flash memory, the D3, D5, D7 and D9 LEDs will light and remain on. The TI OMAP5912 Aruba Board will output the following log:

    Serial Port Initialized
    SDRAM based boot.
    .....
    ArubaBoard configuration mode.
    Preparing flash memory with supervisor mode bootstrap code
    Writing TOC to flash memory
    Writing bootloader code to flash memory
    Flash memory has been prepared with bootloader code.
    Please reset system.
    
  13. Reset the TI OMAP5912 Aruba Board and verify that you have successfully downloaded the boot loader.

To install Remote NDIS on a development workstation

  1. Turn on the TI OMAP5912 Aruba Board.

  2. A message icon will display on the bottom right corner of your workstation’s screen that reads: "Found New Hardware".

  3. The Found New Hardware Wizard starts and displays "Can windows connect to Windows Update to check for software?".

  4. Check the button No, not this time and click Next.

  5. Check the radio button Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) and click Next.

  6. Select the Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install radio button and click Next.

  7. Select the Have Disk button and click Browse to select Usb8023.inf file from %_WINCEROOT%\Public\Common\Oak\Drivers\Ethdbg\Rndismini\Host and click Ok.

  8. Ignore any warnings and click Continue Anyway.

  9. Open Usb8023.sys from the %WINDIR%\System32\Drivers directory. If the driver installation suspends, reset the TI OMAP5912 Aruba Board with the S1 switch and installation will continue.

  10. Click Finish to finish the driver installation process.

  11. Reset TI OMAP5912 Aruba Board.

  12. From your workstation’s Start menu, right click on My Network Places and select Properties. You should now see a new Local Area Connection icon (possibly named Local Area Connection 2).

  13. Highlight both Local Area Connection 1 and Local Area Connection 2, then right click and select Bridge Connections. A new icon, named Network Bridge, will be created.

    Note

    The steps above are specific to Windows XP, but other Windows versions have a similar sequence.

    If you previously downloaded the initial boot loader image to flash memory, you can now download boot loader updates to the TI OMAP5912 Aruba Board.

To download boot loader updates to the TI OMAP5912 Aruba Board

  1. Configure your terminal emulation software (such as Microsoft HyperTerminal) with the following settings:

    Bits per second Data bits Parity Stop bits Flow control

    38400

    8

    None

    1

    None

    This enables you to see the debug output once you have downloaded the boot loader update to the device.

  2. Turn on the TI OMAP5912 Aruba Board.

  3. Open Visual Studio 2005.

  4. From the File menu, choose Open Project/Solution.

  5. From the Open Project dialog box, navigate to the debug or release directory in %_WINCEROOT%\OSDesigns\<project name>\RelDir, and choose the Eboot.bin file.

    Note

    The Eboot.bin file is different from the Eboot.nb0 file. Choose Eboot.bin when updating the boot loader image.

  6. Configure a USB connection to the TI OMAP5912 Aruba Board.

    Note

    Once you have configured a connection to your target device, you may need to reset the device before the download process can begin. For more information, see Resetting a Target Device.

  7. From the Target menu, choose Attach Device.

    A dialog box displays a progress indicator for the download. Click the Close button when the download is complete.

  8. Verify that you have successfully downloaded the Windows Embedded CE boot loader update. Your terminal emulation software will display the updated boot loader message. The D3, D5, D7 and D9 LEDs will also remain on continuously.
