Business value

Customers need visibility within the Power BI environment. Power BI administrators need to monitor performance, understand usage and adoption growth, support audits, and ensure compliance within their Power BI environment. This requires access to detailed historical metrics. Customers also need to ensure business continuity by accessing recent activity data to respond to issues immediately.

Feature details

Administrators will have automatic access to a dedicated workspace that will contain historical datasets and reports to help monitor and govern Power BI. The following areas of Power BI will be available:

  • Report usage and performance metrics: Provides insights into the user actions performed on Power BI reports through the Power BI portal, mobile apps, or embedded within custom applications. Usage and performance are logged at the report page level and include a breakdown of time spent on queries and report rendering. This helps you understand whether an issue is related to an external data source, the Power BI data model, or design choices in the report.

  • Audit logs: Provides information on asset lifecycle activities (create, access, modify, delete). The information will match what is available in the Power BI activity log and Microsoft 365 audit log. This Azure integration provides access that doesn't require Microsoft 365 admin rights to view the audit data. The Power BI administrator can control who has logging ability.

  • Power BI Premium Gen2 utilization: Provides capacity utilization logs and metrics about workload activity, core allocation, autoscale, throttling, CPU, and memory usage. This enables capacity planning, capacity optimization, cost distribution, and cross-charging.

For advanced debugging, we support integration with Azure Log Analytics. Power BI administrators and workspace owners will have access to detailed real-time and historical metrics. With these new metrics, administrators will be able to analyze performance and activity to better understand usage and resolve problems. The metrics are visualized by using a Power BI template app and reports. The following data points are available:

  • Analysis Services engine: Provides insights into activities performed against the Power BI datasets for reports and ad-hoc queries. This allows you to investigate query and refresh activity, load, and performance.
